September 30, 2005: Three Days, Three Shows -- Day 1

Marysville, CA
Sleep Train Amphitheater

So, have you ever had one of those days at work where you spend all your time putting out one fire while two more erupt behind you?? Well, I've had two straight weeks of that. The only things that kept me sane were popping Escape in the CD player, a bottle of wine, and repeating to myself "Just a few more days until your Journey weekend" over and over and over.

When I finally cut out of work around noon yesterday it felt like the last day of school -- woo hoo! I'm FREE! Off to have FUN! Now tell me, how many people think driving 150 miles in an afternoon (and then 150 miles BACK a few hours later) is fun??

But fun it was. After a rest stop at Roxanne's for an early supper, it was off to Marysville and show one of three in a row. For those of you who've never been to Marysville, it's about 40 miles and a million years away from Sacramento -- talk about the middle of no where! One two lane road leads to the amphitheater and you're quite sure you're lost by the time you actually find the place.

As I said, I REALLY needed a Journey show last night, and wow, did I ever get one. I think this was the best show I've seen so far. (Though Irvine still wins for best set list!) Leslie and I were sitting up in the first section behind the pit on Neal's side. Fairly decent seats overall, but we're both used to being spoiled with great seats. The nice thing about it was we really were able to take in the whole production -- staging, performing, etc. You miss some of that when you're up close and personal.

Of course, the down side of being further away from the stage is that you wind up in the (cue music) No Standing Zone.... Other than a few die-hard folks (me, Leslie, Roxanne and her gang, Hope...) not a whole lot of people were standing out by us. At least no one made us sit down either, so that was cool. The crowd was, as always, a bit confused by the first set, but I've really grown to love those tunes. Last night in particular, just letting the sounds of "Kohoutek" and "Nickel & Dime" wash over me was just the antidote I needed for all my stress.

They've changed the first set up a bit since I've seen them last in early August, and included two Generations tunes in the set. "The Place in Your Heart" (so great to hear that again live!) and "In Self-Defense" (much better live IMO) made for a nice change with the early years. Ross took on "Walks Like a Lady" in the first set, and when I looked around there were 3 teen-aged boys who were just going completely nuts over it. Don't know if they were going nuts just to go nuts, or if they were really into the song, but they sure looked like they were having a blast!

After dashing back to my seat from intermission, I found the crowd much more responsive to the second set. Again as expected. Still, the folks around me only stood for about half the set. While I would normally say WTF to that, having the two 6 foot plus guys in front of me sitting down was quite helpful! The guys were absolutely solid for this set. Everything sounded just spot on. There was no one particular highlight for me as everything went extremely well. The only disappointment being Deen not taking a lead vocal.

When they came out for the encore, Steve's intro to "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" was just incredibly sexy. Leslie and I just looked at each other and said "Wow." The show ended about 3 hours after it began and it was off to do battle with the parking lot and to make the long haul back home and try to get enough rest for today's show. (Didn't quite happen, I could use about another 2 hours of sleep, but must leave for Novato in about an hour...)

One show down, two to go...

May 22, 2003: Last Minute Madness

Sacramento, CA
Arco Arena

Okay, I lied, but can I help it when a floor ticket pops up on Ticketmaster two days before the concert??? Yep, a fairly last minute decision to make the two hour drive to Sacramento for last night's show. Unfortunately, the drive actually took THREE hours since there is no good way to get from the SF Peninsula to Sacramento with out having to go through Oakland and the traffic disaster that is the East Bay. So despite leaving work at 4:00 I was a tad late for the show. Not too late though -- I pulled into Arco's parking lot a couple of minutes before the 7:00 show time, and by the time I parked, picked up my ticket at will call, and got inside I found I had only missed one and half songs arriving in the middle of "Keep Pushin'" (Gonna have to admit here I'm glad REO hasn't changed their set list yet -- didn't have to worry about notes for their set!)

REO was really on last night, though the bass was overpowering. My poor ears were REALLY ringing when they finished their set and that's the first time that's happened this tour! Perhaps it had to do with the venue or that there was a speaker suspended directly over my head, but my bones were rattling through their whole set! Kevin's mic sounded a little distorted too (though that may be a factor of "Echo Arena"), but overall it was an enjoyable set. And Kevin's talking was more amusing last night than before -- it's the same shtick, but it was livelier and I actually laughed at the Playboy mansion story!

Styx came on second, and I've gotta tell ya, the more I see these guys the more I enjoy them. (Thank goodness they're touring with Journey or I might wind up going broke trying to travel to Styx shows too!) They switched their set list up a bit and got me all confused! JY usually spends a little time chatting with the audience before "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye" to give Glen Burtnik time to get out in to the audience, so when he started talking after "Lady" I jotted down "Kiss Your Ass" in my notebook and started looking around to see where Glen would pop up. Imagine my amazement when I notice Glen was still on stage and JY launches in to "These Are Times"! (Yikes... scratch out the notebook...) This was followed up by "Blue Collar Man" and about mid-way through the song I notice someone doing the "duck run" out from back stage and I think "oh man someone's having equipment problems, here comes the roadie!" The "roadie" stands up and it's Kevin Cronin joining in on vocals. The crowd went NUTS -- people who had been sitting down (yes hard to believe) were on their feet and going wild. Got me wondering if anyone would show up later during Journey's set. (No such luck.)

Journey of course was next and they hit the stage right on time (they had me a little worried after San Jose!) and opened with the Red 13 Intro then went in to "Separate Ways." Deen was just slamming on the drums during the intro -- amazing power there! I gotta say that the opening was a little disjointed to me, though "Separate Ways" got a much better response than "State of Grace" usually does. Still, keep "State of Grace" if the Red 13 Intro is being used -- it just sounds weird otherwise! Like the show in LA, the set list has changed from the first shows of the tour. Gone are "Precious Time" (waaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!) and the medley of "La Do Da/Dixie Highway/Line of Fire" (waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!) And in their place are "Chain Reaction" and "Higher Place" (okay that's cool) The reaction of the crowd to "Chain Reaction" and "Higher Place" isn't that much different than "Precious Time" or the medley though. I was the only person in my row (or the row in front of me) standing for "Higher Place" and a some of the die hard Nor Cal crew in the same row a section over were the only ones standing in THEIR row! I think I mentioned in the San Jose report that Jonathan's solo before "Open Arms" has changed -- another beautiful piece of work.

The show closed off in an energized fashion and when Jonathan pulled out the harmonica for "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" I was amazed. The fun part of watching him on the harmonica is the look in his eyes -- he is really concentrating on what he's doing! That was a very nice treat to add to an old favorite.

During the set I was amused by the little things that ran through my mind. It's funny what you notice after so many shows -- Neal making a face and cursing during "Don't Stop Believin'," Jonathan with an "oops" look on his face at another point, Ross standing with his neck askew looking like a deer in the headlights.... It's interesting noticing these subtleties. The show ended about 11:30 (which also threw me off since the shows I've been to so far all started at 7:30 and ended around midnight!) and it was time for the 2 hour drive home (accomplished in about 90 minutes due to some violations of the local speed limits!) For the ride home I popped Escape into the CD player and it hit me that there's one song that hasn't been played in AGES that needs to be rotated into the set list -- can anyone remember the last time "Who's Crying Now" was played??? My best recollection is the 1998 tour! That is really just too long!

Okay, this is really it for a while, though odds are there will be another show squeezed in between now and Chicago (I just can't seem to stay away....)

August 8-18: Michelle's Adventures in Journeyland (part 4)

We were back to the hotel by 2:00 and in bed shortly thereafter. Our Saturday event was an early lunch at the Fog City Diner, site of a Journey photo shoot for the Raised on Radio album. (And, to our surprise, there was a picture of Neal hanging on the wall outside the ladies room!) Amazingly we ran on time for this day, and got to the diner for a group lunch. While we waited on our food, we held a personalized quiz for Cat, since she’d missed the entire event the day before with her Fan Club obligations. Then it was time for the raffle, and I think everyone went home happy with some autographed goodie.
Back to the hotel for a quick change of clothes and a video thank you from the committee to the band (next time, cue cards for me...) and off to the cars for the drive to Marysville for that night’s concert. Smokers in one car, nonsmokers in the other, and we were off. I led to the bridge and Darla (with Ana Marie as a navigator) let the rest of the way. We would have been perfectly on time too if we hadn’t missed the exit and gone about 3 miles out of our way. I still hate driving a mini van though...awful awful awful...and the fact we weren’t killed twice is simply amazing...I guess my skills are better than I thought!
Mary Ann had gotten Fan Club seats for the two of us, and Ana Marie had them again for she and Toni. Imagine our shock when Ana Marie got after show passes again! Wow. Mary Ann and I had 3rd row seats for this show, and as luck would have it, Cat was sitting in the same row, two seats over! We talked to the couple sitting between us, Mark and Jae—also fan club members—and asked if they would mind moving down a seat so that the three of us could sit together. They were more than gracious and agreed, and so, when “Faithfully” was played, Cat, Mary Ann and I wound up on the giant video screen as we swayed back and forth in time to the song. Yet another claim to fame!
Once more the show came and went too quickly and it was time to go outside. Getting through the throngs of people with after show passes was a bit of a trick—apparently a couple of radio stations had given bunches away. We all waited outside again for Ana Marie who was able to bring her Aunt Sheryl to the after show this time. The wait wasn’t nearly as long this time…Ana Marie was out in about 20 minutes. We all piled back into the cars and headed back to The City, having said our farewells to Angie and Michelle A. who were staying in the area on their way to Konocti the next day.
After more adventures in driving through San Francisco in a mini van, we arrived back at the hotel around 2:00 and gathered the committee in my room. Mary Ann had a 6:00 flight, so her shuttle was picking her up at 4:15. We all stayed up with her to say good-bye, and then crawled into bed. The 8:30 wake up call was a cruel way to start Sunday morning, but we had arranged for an “informal” farewell brunch at 9:00. I had just crawled out of bed when there was a soft knock on my door...uncertain if we’d put out the do not disturb sign, I got up to answer it to make sure it wasn’t housekeeping. It wasn’t. It was Dale. I told her I’d just gotten up and I’d meet her in the lobby in a few minutes. I splashed some water on my face and pulled on some clothes and stumbled downstairs as the rest of my committee members slowly awoke and arose.
Brunch ended and it was time to say our good-byes. Everyone needed to check out of their hotels and get headed for home. It had been a fantastic weekend and the complete and utter exhaustion I was feeling was well worth it. I finally arrived home for some brief rest around 3 Sunday afternoon. I unpacked enough to do laundry, took a nap, ate a light dinner, and crawled into my very own bed for a good night’s sleep.
Journey Past and Present 2001 was over. The next week was mine...all mine...5 Journey shows in 7 days...
to be continued...

August 10-11, 2001: Journey Past & Present 2001 (JPP2001)

Mountain View and Marysville, CA
Shoreline Amphitheater & Sacramento Valley Amphitheater

Hello gang... I'm home for 24 hours before heading up to Konocti and then down to So. Cal for the last leg of the tour... I've had quite an amazing weekend so far...

First, to all the gang I met, saw, and chatted with at both shows—it was GREAT all the way around!

Second... WOW...

For those of you who recall a few months back, I sent a post inviting people to a little-fan gathering I was part of organizing for this weekend. We were only 15-people strong, but we had a FANTASTIC weekend of adventures. Of course, as with any such event, there were a few little snags...

First with Shoreline—Due to traffic problems, we wound up missing John Waite's set (bummer!) but we did hear about Neal's appearance at the end of it.

Frampton's set was as entertaining as always—he made a few jokes about the missing locks and several references to the fact that Frampton Comes Alive was recorded mostly at Winterland in San Francisco. At one point in his set, he sat down on the edge of the stage and just played an acoustic guitar. He's quite a guitar player I must say.

Journey Day in San Francisco Proclamation
When Journey's set started, they showed the now standard "arrival" at the venue video, but this one had something else that will make it forever memorable to me and the little group we had at the show. One of my co-organizers came up with the idea to have the day of the concert declared "Journey Day" in San Francisco. So, we contacted the mayor's office and got the paper work done and got a formal proclamation done.

With the kind assistance of Journeycat, we were able to get the proclamations to the band, and the guys had it put up in the video! Talk about a very cool moment! I don't think I’ll ever forget that one...
Proclamation Part 2

The show was a typical hometown kind of thing—lots of friends and family in the crowd (and some how I wound up with seats in the middle of many of them!) And, as expected, the place went nuts when "Lights" was played (with shots of the Golden Gate bridge flashing on the video screen.) And for the first time in all the many shows I've seen the last few years, I actually started crying when it came on.

It was quite nice to finally see the guys play Shoreline. It opened in 1985, so they'd never played there before, yet this is where I've seen most of the concerts I've been to at home. I know that the acoustics of the place aren't always the best, but I like it better than our other "shed" in Concord—the vibe is usually better.

The show for Sacramento was actually an hour's drive north in Marysville at a new venue. A LONG drive from the Bay Area... and again hassles with traffic (and a missed exit and a few other adventures in driving...) meant arriving just as John Waite was starting his set.

I really hate missing a moment of his show because I really enjoy it. Neal came out again to play with him at the end of his set, so that was great. And that was also when I noticed Neal seems to be sporting an earring—when did that happen? I don't recall seeing that before.

Since the drive was so long, by the time Frampton's set started I was starving, so I decided that I probably should go grab something to eat and drink (especially since the venue had absolutely NO covering for the reserved section—this in a town where it's regularly over 100 degrees in the summer!) While I was getting food with my friends, we ran into a bunch of other fan club members and spent the majority of Frampton's set just chatting. We could hear the tunes, and if we wanted to see, there were TVs hanging in the food booths.

At one point, a person from the local radio station promoting the show was chatting with my friend and I and asked us what the general fan reaction was to this "Perry-less" Journey. Of course we raved about Steve and said that after 3 years the majority of fans we've encountered have come around to the "new" band.

It was time now for Journey, so I headed back to my 3rd-row dead-center fan club seat (the first FC seats I've had this tour) and awaited the guys. I gotta tell ya, the fan club seats are awesome! Besides sitting with my pals, just chatting with the other FC members around me was terrific. The guys hit the stage and we were on our feet—except for most of the folks sitting in the two rows in front of me!!! Okay, I can understand some people want to sit through a show, fine, but, um... HELLOOOO!! If you have FRONT ROW SEATS you get off your butt! These people were sitting for MOST of the show! At one point Neal even commented on how they like it better when the front rows are standing.

Now, of course, the flip side of having the first two rows sitting, meant I had an UNBELIEVABLE view of the stage. I'm hoping my pictures all turn out. Oh... a funny little aside there... when we were coming in and going through the usual security check, I actually had to open my purse (with my Canon Rebel in the bottom) and show security. When the woman asked me to lift my wallet, I thought, "Oh damn, busted!", as my camera was right underneath it. I was even MORE sure I'd have it taken away when I realized as I lifted my wallet part way out of my purse that TWO rolls of film were in plain sight. The woman said "Binoculars are okay" and let me in!

August 14-15, 1999: No Place Like Home

Concord and Sacramento, CA
Concord Pavilion and Hornet Field

There's no place like home....

Took the day off to recover (rejoice, reflect) from back to back to back shows this weekend. Friday night a friend and I went to see REM, and I never thought I'd see the day when REM had more lights on stage than Journey. Making a mental note for future tours, don't schedule a non-Journey show the same week as a Journey show... it just pales in comparison.

So on to the true reason for this post... Journey was home in the Bay Area once again. What a marvelous weekend. For starters, I want to publicly thank fellow-Joureyfester Leslie and her husband Todd for hosting a mini-fest BBQ in her back yard! She took me on my word that the various and sundry Journey-ers that I've met over the past year or so would not trash her home and welcomed the seven or eight of us with open arms. And it was so nice to see that the RawkDawg was housebroken.

After our lovely BBQ, we made the quick drive over to the Concord Pavilion for the evening's festivities.  This was a hometown crowd for sure -- we were told it was a sell out shortly before the show started (woo hoo!) When Foreigner hit the stage maybe 5% of the crowd was on it's feet dancin' and singing along. A "yo-yo" crowd if I ever saw one up/down/up/down.  They sounded better than when I heard them in Chicago, and Lou looks to have lost a few pounds in the intervening two months.

Then our boys hit the stage and the whole place was on it's feet screamin' and cheering. This was actually one of the older crowds I've ever seen at a Journey show. Or at least where I was sitting -- I felt like a babe in the woods compared to most of the folks sitting around me! Anyway, everyone was having a grand ole time, and stayed on their feet most of the night (sitting only for the intro to and part of "Open Arms" -- don't ask me why.)

As with all shows, there was the good, the bad, and the ugly. In reverse order:

The ugly: The Nazi ushers who were checking tickets every ten feet, which made it difficult to go visit with friends in other sections. Relax people, we're here to have a good time not live in a police state!

The bad: Jon had guitar problems early on and they continued off and on through out the show.

The good: Just about everything else. I knew Neal would be playing "Amazing Grace" beforehand, but was still knocked out when I heard it -- it brought tears to my eyes. That new verse to "Don't Stop Believin'" is great. We all know Steve's been singing "in your city" during "Lights" at every show, but damn it's so much MORE when it's the Bay Area show... Deen was amazing, and showed no signs that he'd hurt himself just 2 weeks ago. The banner for the Ross Valory Fan Club that was unfurled in one of the 2nd tier seats. Steve rubbing Neal's head as he walked by. Ross and his lighter for "Faithfully."

Sacramento was the next night and, I will have to admit, the Sac crowd for the SECOND time in a row was an even better crowd than the SF (area -- Concord's about 40 miles out) show. I like to think that's because all the folks who were born and raised in the SF Bay Area have moved to the less expensive Sacramento area. (That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.)

Sac was as enjoyable as Concord, with much the same good, bad and ugly as above. This time Jon had a problem with one of his keyboards and spent half the night fiddling with it when Neal was doing solos. The organizers of this event should be shot for poor planning for parking and gate entry. And more Nazi ushers... sheesh...

One of the highlights of both nights was Steve's intro to "Faithfully." He made a comment about how there are obstacles and changes of direction in every journey and that change isn't always easy and thanked the fans for welcoming him. That was classy, and I applaud him for that.

Over the last year or so, I've met so many nice folks from our virtual world.  From the gaggle of people I met at the convention last summer, to the various concerts, to e-pals from all around. And seeing that all those die hard fans were in the first 10 rows in Sacramento last night, well that was just awesome!

Now, just a few more shows before the guys get in the studio and get out that new CD!

December 30-31, 1998: How I Spent My New Year's Eve

Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV
Memorial Auditorium and Reno Hilton

Steve Augeri and me after the San Francisco show Dec 29.
Okay folks, I'm sure you're all just dying to know how my New Year's Eve went. Well, you're gonna have to wait a minute, because I have TWO DAYS worth of stuff to tell ya! LOL!

December 30 -- this was the Sacramento show. I left home at 3:00 which would have given me plenty of time to get to Sacramento to meet up with Debbie S. and others for dinner at 6:00. Well, I forgot to grab the directions, so had to turn around and go back to my apartment (thank goodness I was only a few blocks away when I realized this.) Then I had to go drop off my rent check and get gas. Next thing I know I'm running about 20 minutes later than I had planned. So naturally, this is when I get stuck in traffic and it takes me an hour and a half to get TO the Bay Bridge (about a 15 mile drive). By the time I'm across the bridge it's 5:45 -- when I was supposed to be in Sacramento! I finally arrived in Sac at 7:00 -- highly stressed from the traffic and trying to read my map in the dark. Got to the Hard Rock and met up with Debbie and Katherine and the others. Had a glass of wine to settle my nerves and gobbled some Buffalo wings for dinner (I've been eating miserably lately!)

We head over to the show where we've got about 12th row seats over on the far aisle (Neal's side, again.) When we walk in we see signs that say the show is being filmed! Okay, so my mission in life now is to get a copy of that film. If the show wasn't sold out, it was pretty darn close. Loud raucous crowd. Another amazing show.

I spent the night at Debbie's and the next day we trek on up to Reno. After Debbie drops me off at my hotel, I catch a quick nap while listening to one of the local radio stations doing a "Best Albums Ever" countdown. Escape came up around number 20, naturally, this was just as I was leaving my room because Debbie's husband was picking me up.

When I got to the Hilton, I immediately ran into Kevin, which was quite fortunate since we'd forgotten to make plans to meet up and I had his ticket! (D'oh!) We grabbed some dinner (the first actual meal I'd had in days) and started to the pavilion around 9:15 or so.

We met up with Debbie and her kids and went inside about 9:45. Third row, seat 3. Oh yeah. Saved the best for last. Awesome seats. We wound up sitting right behind the couple from San Jose that I had met in Grand Rapids! Perfect -- they'd be standing so I could too! Plus I could tell them to move right or left if I was trying to take a picture!

The show started around 10:15 and was just awesome. At one point I look over at Debbie, who is sitting a row in front of me and a few seats over, and her daughter has a VIP badge on! Cool for her!

Towards the end of the show, the aisle started getting crowded with people coming up to the stage (security had been clearing the aisles pretty well up to that point) which made my view a bit more obscured. So naturally I went into the aisle and finally wound up standing on a chair for the last 20 minutes of the show. (I never do stuff like that!) They finished the main set about 11:55 and instead of going off-stage as they normally do, they stayed on stage and asked what time it was. After they determined that there were 5 more minutes until midnight, they launched into "Can't Tame the Lion," which I hadn't heard since Detroit/Grand Rapids! When that ended, the various wives/girlfriends/kids came on stage with glasses of champagne. We did the countdown thang, balloons dropped, confetti spilled. They played "Auld Lang Syne" and everyone sang along. They finished up with "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Faithfully" -- bringing some of the road crew up on stage at the end for a round of applause for them too.

After the show Debbie managed to sweet talk the security guy
to let all of us backstage with her and her daughter (who had the VIP pass).
I got my picture with Jonathan finally.

We hung around the casino for a while later and kept seeing various folks around -- Neal's step-dad Les came by a few times. Saw Neal talking with his mom and Les a little later and as we were leaving, saw Jonathan carrying his daughter over his shoulder to the elevator to (presumably) put her to bed. (There is a part of me that finds it very scary that I actually know what the family members of my favorite band look like!)

It's been an incredible few days. Well worth this flu I've gotten! LOL! (Heck, I'm actually feeling a WHOLE lot better right now!)
